Fire Extinguisher Info-Chart – Free Resource 
Last year, every Australian received a free fire extinguishing plan for their home or office. It is a core value and a passion for safety that we offer a fire-fighting plan.  In Australia, there are mainly six types of fire extinguishers that can be installed in a building. It is, therefore, important for every inhabitable premise to have fire extinguishers installed and working.

Most people don’t understand that not all fires are the same. If you use the wrong type of fire extinguisher on the wrong class of fire, you can, in fact, make matters worse. Do you know the difference between the six fire extinguishers and their applications? Each one is used for a different type of fire. Choosing the right extinguisher for the fire class could literally make the difference between life and death.

Class B and C fires are assessed by detergent and type of extinguisher, but Class C, D, and K extinguishing agents are assessed by what types of fires and how much they can extinguish.

Classes of fire

  • Class A – fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper, or textiles.
  • Class B – fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel, or oils.
  • Class C – fires involving gases.
  • Class D – fires involving metals.
  • Class E – fires involving live electrical apparatus. (Technically’ Class E’ doesn’t exist however this is used for convenience here)
  • Class F – fires involving cooking oils such as in deep-fat fryers.


Class A


General combustibles. Class A fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper, or textiles. Most suppression types are effective for Class A fires, except for extinguishers that use carbon dioxide. Never use water on an oil fire. Fires that involve flammable, combustible liquids such as petrol, kerosene, oil, tar, paint, wax, cleaning spirits, or alcohol are known as Class B.


Class B


Class B fire extinguishers are used to extinguish fires caused by flammable or combustible liquids. In a work environment, this could be a lubricant used in a device such as oil, petrol, diesel fuel, or petrol and diesel engines.

This class of extinguishers is used for fires where carbon – solid materials such as petrol or diesel – is involved. 


Class C


Class C fire extinguishers are used in the fires caused by combustible gases and can extinguish the fire before the pressure is created. 



Class E


Fire extinguishers (class E) can also stop electrical fires in the event of circuit failure or electrical fault. This includes events related to electrical devices that require electricity or circuits to operate. 


Class F


The F-class extinguisher fights fires caused by-products based on cooking oil and fat, such as oil stains, cooking utensils, and pans. If you are dealing with a fire that can occur in your kitchen or workplace, why would you want to put out the fire bowl? These charts are printed on high-quality glossy cards and very durable, so they last longer. 


The posters are placed in the main traffic area and explain that different fire extinguishers can be used in different fire classes. The DIN – A3 size is ideal for use in public spaces such as schools, hospitals, and fire stations, and the DIN – a4 size 


For domestic use, there are two extinguisher sizes, the “DIN” and “A4.”

Each Type of Extinguisher Users a Different Material

The most common is a multi-purpose dry chemical substance used in class A, B, and C fires. The powder is considered safe for Class C fire because it is electrically embedded with nonconductive current and coats the surface of the applied powder, interrupting the chain reaction of a Class B fire. The dry powder can be extremely effective because of its ability to quench the effect of a fire with dry powder, especially when used with a barrel – made of fuel – and used in conjunction with foam or spray mist.


ABC Powder Fire Extinguisher


Thoughtless use can cause the powder to do more damage than the fire itself and contaminate food, hindering the use of electrical components such as keyboards after discharge. Fire extinguishers with powder are found in kitchens and offices when used in the kitchen or office.


Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher


Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers are the only certified fire extinguisher approved for residential fires involving household electrical equipment such as computers, televisions, fireplaces, and stoves. Because of this, carbon dioxide is the only approved fire extinguishing agent for commercial fires.


CO2 is very safe to use on electrical devices, as it is non-reactive, and when used, there’s no messy, sticky powder left behind after it’s been used. However, CO2 does have a few drawbacks.


The biggest drawback of using a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher is that it is not as effective as many other types of fire safety extinguishers available. Many commercial fire extinguishers use a combination of CO2 and water to get the job done, but because CO2 reacts with water, it can’t always get the extinguishing effect right the first time. 


While many fire safety extinguishers contain carbon dioxide, some products do not. For example, many chemical products like Lysol and Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) will only work when mixed with other chemicals. These products react chemically with the oxygen and make it impossible for carbon dioxide to react. It can sometimes be difficult to remove the HCL from a fire, as it will not evaporate the way some other gases will.


Carbon dioxide extinguishers are easy and safe to operate, and they’re very effective in extinguishing fires, as you can imagine. 

It’s worth bearing in mind that these are just one class of fire safety extinguishers and that many commercial fire safety extinguishers actually use a combination of CO2, water and chemicals to get the job done.


Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher


The Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher is a chemical fire extinguisher that burns clean and safe chemicals that are toxic and corrosive. It is very safe to use and provides excellent results in almost all cases. 


The Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher can be used to extinguish wood fires or any other fuel-burning fires like gas fires, charcoal fires, gas stoves, electric fires, etc. 


The Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher is also capable of extinguishing flammable fluids and combustible organic materials such as rubber, plastics, rubber goods, rubber products, asbestos, and paper products. 


This kind of extinguisher to ensure that no chemicals enter the air, non-toxic material is used for mixing and pouring the mixture into containers.

Water Mist Fire Extinguisher


The Amerex 2.5 Gallon water fire extinguisher has become the choice of many fire departments around the world. Class A fire incidents usually cause about five to ten times the amount of damage to a property that would be caused by a Class B fire, which is less than one percent of the damage done.


This extinguishing product comes with a built-in water tank that provides a supply of water to put out a small fire. The water tank will keep the fire hydrated until the fire is completely extinguished. The Water Fire Extinguisher has a high-quality design and is made of two separate tanks, that are sealed within an enclosed steel cylinder. This prevents any moisture from entering.


The water extinguisher is ideal for use in a fire station, suited to fighting Class A fires fuelled by petrol, diesel, or other non-combustible fuels such as coal, oil, natural gas, wood, coal ash, etc. However, water should not be used on live electrical equipment.

A water spray extinguisher uses very fine water, and the droplets are surrounded by nonconductive air. The extinguisher emits water in the form of mist or fog, but the droplets are much smaller than those in the extinguisher. Water loses its natural surface tension, which allows it to penetrate the burning material more effectively, and heat energy is absorbed more quickly.

Foam Fire Extinguishers have gone through quite a transformation over the past few decades. Originally, it came with a heavy and rather opaque glossy texture that was hard to handle. The foam was also very smelly because of the use of animal fat as a filler. Meanwhile, modern Aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), is now much advanced and evolved. This is why it is now being used in foam fire extinguisher and fire sprinkler systems.


In fact, you can be sure that a fire extinguisher system and fire sprinkler system will only benefit from AFFF. There are several reasons why AFFF is a good choice for fire protection. First, it is lightweight. So it will not cause any extra cost or time for you. Another reason is that it is chemical-free. As a result, you do not need to worry about your family and pets getting sick after using this extinguisher. Finally, it is water-resistant, meaning that it can be used in case of water-related emergencies.


Foam extinguishers are now being used in an increasing number of applications, such as fire fighting and fire protection. Our ability to produce foam from aqueous foil has been further developed and improved. The foam can be made from animal fat also and does smell very strong.

There are several reasons why AFFF is a good choice for fire protection, such as its low cost, ease of use, safety, durability, and durability.


It doesn’t cost you any extra time or money, and the reason is that it’s chemical-free, unlike other fire protection products such as fire retardants and fire extinguishers. 


Clean Agent Fire Extinguisher


NFPA 2001 has defined the term “clean agent” as an electrically nonconductive, volatile, or gaseous fire extinguishing agent that does not leave a residue upon evaporation. A clean agent fire suppression system will take either an inert gas or a chemical that is stored in a container and discharge it, when necessary, to extinguish a fire in its incipient stage.

There are many benefits to using a clean agent fire suppression system. These systems are fast, effective, safe, clean, and eco-friendly, and no protective gases or chemicals are required to be stored inside them.


How do clean agents work?


Waterless fire suppression systems work by releasing gas or mixture of gasses into the air, generally with the aim of reducing the amount of oxygen in the air that feeds the flames. The clean agent, such as CO2, is often stored a distance away from the area it will be protecting.



Where would a clean agent extinguisher likely be used?


This makes them ideal for commercial and industrial facilities containing sensitive computers or materials that could be damaged by water or conventional fire extinguishers. Some common places where clean agents are used include Data centers and server rooms—telecom facilities.
